Why TikTok Shop Growth Starts With Creators & Revenue Follows

Content exposure, not revenue or follower count, is the earliest reliable signal that a brand is about to grow on TikTok Shop. Data from Charm.io shows that brands with the largest, most active creator networks consistently generate the most TikTok Shop sales. A scaled creator network comes first. Content exposure follows. Revenue comes after that.

Key Takeaways

  • Content exposure, not revenue, is the earliest predictor of TikTok Shop growth.
  • Top-performing shops average 5.8 times more unique creators than lower-performing shops in the same category.
  • Creator fit matters as much as creator count: Freckled Poppy outsold Pacsun with 35 percent fewer creators.
  • Skincare sets and bundles benefit disproportionately from how TikTok’s algorithm surfaces related content.
  • The strongest creator strategies rely on sales data, not guesswork, to choose partners and content formats.

The Metric That Predicts Growth Before Revenue Does

Brands asking how TikTok Shop works for creators, and which of them will actually drive sales, should start with a single metric. Alex Nisenzon, CEO of Charm.io, who has spent over a decade building data and ecommerce businesses, including scaling platforms like Similarweb, calls content exposure the "holy grail" metric that brands should be watching, ahead of revenue and ahead of follower count.

The reason is simple: exposure cannot be sustained without a real base of creators behind it, which makes it the leading indicator of everything that follows. Once exposure builds, sales tend to follow close behind, and once sales follow, overall shop performance compounds.

Charm’s data set makes this visible at scale. The platform tracks in-depth metrics across more than 5 million DTC brands and collects daily sales data on TikTok Shop globally, covering everything from ad activity to social performance to creator-driven demand signals in one place. Across categories, the same pattern holds: creator network expansion comes first, content exposure comes second, and growth follows from there.

The Three Signals Worth Watching Right Now

Beyond content exposure itself, three specific signals stand out as the ones worth tracking most closely.

  • Creator velocity: a smart, scaled creator strategy is what actually drives revenue on TikTok Shop.
  • Video views: which act as a read on overall brand awareness and product visibility, visibility that tends to ripple out well beyond TikTok Shop itself and into sales on other channels.
  • Hashtag performance: tied to rising views and revenue, which gives brands and retailers a read on where consumer attention, and spending, is actually concentrated.

Watching these three signals together, rather than any single number in isolation, gives a much clearer read on where a brand’s creator strategy is actually working.

How the TikTok Algorithm Turns Creator Content Into a Buying Habit

TikTok’s algorithm is doing more work here than most brands give it credit for. Rather than surfacing content at random, it shows people a rotation of items they are already inclined to want. A shopper who engages with skincare content, for example, will start seeing a rotation of products that share an ingredient, each one presented by a different creator.

That repetition across creators is not a coincidence. It is the mechanism that turns casual scrolling into a buying habit, and it is part of why some shoppers end up purchasing several versions of the same type of product within a short window.

This dynamic shows up clearly in Charm’s category data. Skincare "sets" and bundles consistently outperform single-SKU listings, creating hero-SKU moments that other categories do not see in the same way. How strongly this effect shows up for a given shop depends heavily on how mature that shop’s TikTok Shop presence already is.

Brands with an established creator base and a longer track record on the platform tend to see the algorithm reward bundled offers more reliably than newer entrants do.

Why Do the Top TikTok Shops Outperform the Rest? It Starts With Creators

Long-Tail of Creator Affiliates

The gap between top-performing shops and everyone else starts with the strength of their creator network. In an analysis of the top 1,000 US shops in the beauty and personal care and health categories between May 2024 and April 2025, Charm found that the top 100 shops averaged 5,000 unique creators. That is 5.8 times the average among the bottom 900 shops, which worked with an average of only 866 creators.

The gap does not stop at creator count. The top 100 shops also averaged 8.1 times more videos, 10.8 times more video views, 8.8 times more monthly ad spend, 9.2 times more units sold, and 14.3 times more total sales than the bottom 900.

Those multipliers compound as they move down the funnel. More creators produce more videos, more videos generate more views, and paid spend amplifies the content that is already working. Brands that treat creator partnerships as a core growth channel, rather than a side experiment, are the ones showing up at the top of these numbers.

More Creators, Fewer Sales: What Freckled Poppy Got Right Over Pacsun

Benchmark Competitor Shop Performance

More creators is not automatically better, and one head-to-head comparison from the women's jeans category makes that clear. Between August 2024 and July 2025, Freckled Poppy, one of the top women's jeans shops tracked by Charm, worked with 3.1 thousand creators and generated $15.3 million in sales. Pacsun, over the same window, leveraged 4.2 thousand creators, roughly 35 percent more than Freckled Poppy, and still generated $2 million less, at $13.3 million.

The difference shows up at the individual creator level. Freckled Poppy's top creator drove $4.6 million in sales from 80 million views, roughly 30 percent of the shop's total revenue. Pacsun's top creator generated 65 million views but only $1.0 million in sales.

The takeaway is not that fewer creators is a strategy on its own. It is that the fit between creator and product matters as much as the size of the TikTok creator network a brand builds. A smaller group of creators who consistently produce content that converts will outperform a larger group that does not.

What Data-Driven Creator Strategy Actually Looks Like

The brands winning on TikTok Shop are not guessing about what is trending, and that is the real difference between them and everyone else. Rather than relying on instinct, they use data to identify creators with proven sales records in their specific product category, track which trends are growing versus shrinking, and analyze which videos are driving actual sales rather than just views.

Content that demonstrates how a product is used, and clearly shows its benefit, tends to be the strongest performer. Beauty brands like Medicube and Dr.Melaxin lean heavily on this format, using before-and-after imagery from creators to show real results rather than simply describing them.

That approach, paired with data on which creators and which content styles are already converting, is what separates a scaled, repeatable creator strategy from one-off viral moments that do not sustain themselves. It is also, in practice, the clearest answer to what makes TikTok Shop for creators work at all: consistent, converting content behind a real creator base.
